My name is Ellen, I’m 17 years old and from a city in Brazil. I have a younger brother and he’s 9 years old. Me and my family get along very well. We like to go to a local park, go out for coffee, watch movies, go to the beach, the mall, to church and meet new restaurants. We also love spending time with my grandparents and the rest of the family.
When I’m not with my family, I normally like to study literature, history or biology, I like watching tv series like “friends”, play the ukulele and sing, and I like to learn new handwriting and drawing techniques. I love dogs very much and all animals in general, although I’m allergic to cats. But I don’t have any pets, unfortunately. I don’t go out a lot with my friends because here where I live is dangerous lately, so my parents worry, but they trust me very much when it comes to me going out.
In the week, I wake up at 5:30, take a shower, get ready, eat breakfast and my mother leaves me at school, that starts at 7:10. I leave at 1:20 but on Tuesdays and Wednesday’s I only leave school at 5:40 because we have extra classes. When I get home at 1:20, I eat lunch, take a shower and take a nap until 4:40. After that I watch something and then I study for about 2 hours and then I’ll help my brother do his homework. I have dinner and get ready for bed at 10 o’clock. When I get home at 5:40 from school, I take a shower, have dinner, study for a little while and get ready to go to sleep earlier because I get home more tired these days.
In the weekends I usually spend my time at home but sometimes we go to the beach, to a nearby city or state, to my family’s house or I go out with friends to the movies or the mall. On Sundays we go to church in the morning, at 10:00am and at night at 6:00pm. Then we go out to eat and go home to enjoy the family. I tried to start jogging in the afternoons but my parents say it’s dangerous to go alone and nobody can go with me, so my plans failed. I’m not very into sports but I used to do rhythm gymnastics some years ago and I was good at it, but my schedule started getting fuller and I had to quit.
I don’t have any problems in going out to different places. I love the outdoors even though I’m allergic to mosquito bites, but I really prefer the city.
I chose the United States as my exchange country because I would love to increase my knowledge about other countries and cultures and it’s very different from Brazil. And I’m willing to do new things like the exchange program to meet new people and live differently, I believe it will be very educational and interesting live this new experience.
I intend to study psychology because I found out I have a passion for the human brain and its behavior and I love to help others with their difficulties. One of my biggest dreams is to get into a good psychology college.
Anyway, I really hope I enjoy the country and my new family and friends in these 10 months and come back more independent and with new learnings. I’m looking forward to meeting my host family and I’m already so grateful for having me.
