LETTER FROM Gregor

Gregor

Dear host family,

my name is Gregor and I’m a 16-year-old exchange student from Germany. When my semester abroad starts, I’ll be 17 years old. I’m very grateful that you are making a semester abroad possible for me and that you’re letting me be a part of your family.

In Germany, I live in a flat in the city with my parents and two cats. I’m currently in the 11th grade of Gymnasium. Being good at school is usually easy for me. One of my hobbies is that I’m a scout in the BdP scout association. Together with a partner, I run a group of six 12-year- old boy scouts. We meet once a week and we do camps or hikes every few weeks. The camps take place in the local group, which is a larger, mixed-age and mixed-gender group. My personal highlight is the annual Großfahrt (“great hike”), where we spend three weeks in a small group hiking on our own in a foreign country.

Another important activity for me is programming: I’m part of the development team of the open source game platform Luanti, where I mainly work on better mobile support. I play the guitar with the scouts, but also in a small band, and I enjoy reading fantasy novels.

In the 9th grade, I took part in a 10-day exchange to France organized by my school. I enjoyed learning about a new culture and living in a host family. That’s when I started to think about doing a semester abroad. I chose the U.S. as my destination country because the culture in your country has a great influence on Germany and I wanted to experience that culture myself.

I’m excited to learn about culture and life in the U.S. during my semester abroad and I’m curious to see what high school in the U.S. is like and how big the differences to German school are. I’m looking forward to finding friends my age at school or elsewhere and learning about their life. I’d love to find some people to make music together and I’m also very interested in scouts in the U.S. and how different or similar they are to German scouts. At the same time, I’m open to new activities and hobbies and I’m curious to see how my interests and perspectives will change during my time abroad.

I can’t wait to get to know you and your life in the U.S. and I’m very thankful that you want to spend your time with me. I hope we’ll have a great time together.
