LETTER FROM Hin Yan (Hillary)

Hin Yan (Hillary)

Dear Host Family,

My name is Hillary, and I am thrilled to introduce myself as a potential member of your household through this US exchange program. I come from a typical family of four in Hong Kong, including my parents, my younger sister, and me. My father works as an airport management expert, and my mother is a full-time mom, both of whom have instilled in me the values of curiosity, kindness, and resilience. My sister, who is 12, shares my love for playing piano and ballet dancing, and we often spend our weekends watching TV or visiting different places in Hong Kong. Our home is always filled with laughter, shared meals, and lively discussions about everything from schools to dreams. My family’s support has given me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone and embrace new experiences—like this opportunity to live and learn with you!

As for myself, I am an enthusiastic and adaptable 15-year-old with a passion for connecting with people and exploring the world. Academically, I excel in subjects like Biology and Chemistry. I received school’s academic award with scholarship for six consecutive years and conduct award for 4 years. I recently won an award in the Hong Kong Secondary Schools Debating Competition as part of the Winning Team. I am also a member of 4 local gifted children institutes operated by the most famous universities in Hong Kong, The University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education. Outside the classroom, I enjoy watching table tennis competition from TV, playing the piano, and participating in different Extra Curriculum Activities. Furthermore, I participated in school teams of table tennis, badminton, choir and recorder team, etc. I passed my Grade 8 piano exam with distinction and won several champions in local piano competitions. I also passed Ballet Vocational Intermediate Exam and Grade 5 Chinese Drum Exam with merit.

In past years, I grabbed every opportunity to broaden my horizons by joining school exchange programs or family vacations to Australia, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Singapore, Taiwan, and United Kingdom, in which I could appreciate different cultures. Friends often describe me as optimistic and open-minded, someone who finds joy in small moments, whether it’s trying a new recipe or stargazing on a clear night. My goal is to study subjects related to humanities in the future, as I dream of working to bridge cultural gaps and advocate for global collaboration. This program, I believe, will be a transformative step toward that vision.

The reason I am so eager to join this program extends beyond my academic or life aspirations. I want to immerse myself in your culture, not as a tourist, but as a temporary family member. I yearn to learn your traditions, share heartfelt stories over homemade meals, and contribute to your daily life—whether by helping with chores, teaching you phrases in my language, or simply exchanging perspectives on the world. Growing up in a multicultural neighborhood, I’ve always been fascinated by how people from different backgrounds can create meaningful connections, and I see this exchange as a chance to deepen that understanding. Most importantly, I want to build a genuine relationship with you, one rooted in mutual respect and shared growth. I am ready to embrace both the challenges and joys of this journey, and I hope to bring warmth, curiosity, and positivity into your home.

Thank you for considering me as part of your family. I can’t wait to meet you and create unforgettable memories together!
