Dear Host Family, my name is Carlota, and I’m fourteen years old. I’m a nice and energetic girl who loves smiling and laughing. I believe that I make friends pretty easily, and I’m an easy-going and talkative person. I also like to observe what’s around me to appreciate how my life is. Being self-demanding is one of my weaknesses; I like doing everything perfectly, and I sometimes get stressed about this.
My family is the most important thing in my life. My mother, who works as a secretary, is hardworking and an incredible person who always wants what is best for me. She is a social person and likes to joke with me. The funniest member of my family is my dad; he always wants me to be happy, and he takes care of me. He works as a truck driver. I have one sister, and she is a psychologist. Although she doesn’t live with me, she visits often, and I have so much fun with her. We love baking, traveling, and playing together. My dog, Snoopy, is so little and adorable that I’m always hugging him. I love playing with him and going for walks. I enjoy spending time with my family so much. We always have lunch and dinner together, love playing board games, and sometimes plan a day trip to the mountains or the beach. My family has a tradition where we reunite every Sunday at my grandfather’s house. Additionally, on April 1st, we meet to have a barbecue and eat a typical Catalan cake called “la Mona.” It’s so delicious, and I have so much fun with my cousins.
Currently, I’m in 9th grade of high school, and my favorite subject is Biology. In the future, I’m still not sure what I want to study, but I’m interested in health and business. They are very different, I know! My high school is quite big for my town, but everyone knows each other. Listening to music and going to concerts is one of my passions. I love pop music and some rap. Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo are my favorite singers. I enjoy baking pastries, going shopping with friends or my mother, and learning about fashion and makeup.
I absolutely love traveling! I have visited many countries with my family, But my favorite destinations have been New York, my favorite city since I was seven years old, and Rovaniemi, in Finland. In the future, I would love to expand this list and travel all around the world. My favorite sport is gymnastics, but I alsoenjoy track and field, and I’m considering trying tennis. Moreover, every winter I go skiing with my dad, and in summer, we enjoy swimming in the sea. I’m an avid reader and read quite fast; my favorite genres are romance, mystery, and thriller. I really like my country. I think it has a very rich culture with a lot of history. Also, I love the gastronomy and all the different landscapes, like the beaches and the mountains. My favorite foods are Spanish omelette, my granny’s cannelloni (a recipe I’m trying to learn), and soup. I honestly can’t choose between the three because they are all so delicious. Usually, my father prepares lunch and my mother dinner, but sometimes, because I know a few recipes, I like to cook for them. I think I’m pretty good at it. I also help with housework: I make my bed, do the laundry, wash the dishes, etc.
With this experience, apart from significantly improving my English, I hope to learn a lot about the culture of the United States—their beliefs, traditions, etc. I would love to share a bit of Spanish culture and see the differences between both. I also look forward to experiencing life in a completely different country, far from home. Learning to live without my current parents’ help will make me more independent and prepare me better for the future.
Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to my future host family and thank them for their hospitality. I am so grateful to have been given this great opportunity. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I’m really looking forward to this amazing experience and can’t wait to meet my host family and learn from this new adventure.
