LETTER FROM Hoi Kiu (Janice)

Hoi Kiu (Janice)

Hello! I’m Janice, from Hong Kong. I’m now 15 years old and I’m turning to 16 in 2025. There are four members in my family, my mum, my dad and my older brother. My grandpa and grandma live near us, so we usually eat dinner together. All my family members, including my uncle, all know how to play badminton, and we play badminton together almost every weekend. I love dancing. I have been learning to dance since I was 3 years old. Until now, I have been dancing for 12 years. At school, I’m a member of dance club and I teach my schoolmates to dance. Dancing makes me feel confident and powerful. Every time when I dance, my moves and the music combine smoothly, making me feel that I am in total control of myself. That’s why I love dancing. I like playing badminton too. I have been a member of my school badminton team since primary 3. The best thing of playing badminton is that every weekend my family and I play together. My brother is also good at playing badminton. He has played badminton since primary school too, and we are at the same level. Maybe he is even better than me, haha! I enjoy teaming and battling with him.

At school, I also joined athletics throwing team. I am a head prefect, every school day I need to be on duty during recess. Sometimes I have to go to school early to be on duty. Though this position is very tiring and cost me a lot of recess time, I love being a prefect. I have made a lot of friends when carrying out my duty, so I enjoy it. I am also a member of Student Union this year. It is so exciting that I can help organize some school events, like Christmas singing contest, social competition, teacher-student sports competition… All of them can provide a better school life for my schoolmates. Academically, I’m now majoring in visual arts, physical education and Chinese history. Last year, I attained the highest virtual arts results in my form. I was over the moon because it was my first time to have such a good result.

In my free time, I’ll do some drawings, DIY some beaded bracelets, enjoy music, do some exercise to train my abdominal muscles. I usually spend my free time on my own, because I need some downtime to recharge. I have done a personalities test before, and I found I’m INFJ/P, which means I’m a person who is introverted, intuitive, and love using feeling to design things and following plans. I think I’m also a sensitive person. I can easily get moved and shed tears when I see touching movies. Funny point is that all my friends think I’m an extrovert.

The reason why I wanted to join this high school exchange program is to gain a deeper understanding of another culture, try new things, leave my familiar surroundings and “comfort zone” to learn to be independent. I want to experience a different education system so that I can find the best way for me to learn. I am also very excited to share my culture and create lifelong memories with my future host family and friends there.

Thank you so much for reading!
