Dear Future Host Family,

My name is Song, and I am a 16-year-old student from South Korea. I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to live with you and experience life in the United States! Even though I don’t know you yet, I truly appreciate your kindness and generosity in considering opening your home to a student from a different country with an unfamiliar culture.

Let me share a little about myself. I live in a small town surrounded by apartments, but it is surprisingly peaceful because it has a beautiful stream crossing through it, along with magnolia trees that bloom merrily in the spring. This is a place I will surely miss, but also one I’ll be excited to share with you. My family and I enjoy spending time together—whether it is listening to my mother play the piano or gathering around the table for a friendly board game with my father. My grandfather lives nearby as well, so I visit him often to talk and enjoy his company.

In my free time, I enjoy reading books, writing poems, and watching movies or shows like operas and musicals. These activities allow me to express myself and connect with emotions in meaningful ways. I also love listening to music of all kinds— from old band hits and modern pop to classical music. I try to explore a wide range of interests because I think it is important to broaden my perspectives.

I am curious and love exploring new ideas, but I can be a bit timid. While this may seem like a weakness, I appreciate that it helps me stay thoughtful and prevents me from making reckless decisions. I also consider myself as someone who tries to be empathetic and respectful of other people’s perspectives. Personal growth is very important to me, and I hope this exchange program helps me learn further about your culture—and myself. I look forward to trying new things, making new friends, and learning about your lifestyle.
